So far so good...

I was amazed to get a call back from Nora at CHSFS this morning. Amazing because it has only been less than 2 work days since we spoke last. Great first impression!

She said all seemed to be in order for CHSFS but that they wanted to send our HS and other supporting documents to their staff in Ethiopia to review. Along with our homestudy, update, and a few other documents I am also sending a letter about our desire to adopt from Ethiopia.

Understanding the
relaxed African culture (hey I'm Puerto Rican!) we don't expect to here any news back for a couple of weeks... but one can hope!

Liberia??

I just got an email from the director of international adoptions at the agency we used to adopt Amelia. She said they were working in Liberia which might be a possibility for us.

Though the thought of working with the agency again is very tempting our hearts are excited about Ethiopia.

Can't wait to hear back from Nora at CHSFS but we don't really expect to until the end of the week or so.

We will stick with CAS!!!

We were initially VERY excited about the possibility of working with All God's Children International, but have just heard from the director of our home study agency, Christian Adoption Services (henceforth CAS) that AGCI will not work with them. It appears that CAS was asked by AGCI, on behalf of a former CAS family, to sign an agreement guaranteeing postplacement reports for 18 years. CAS did not feel it wise to sign this agreement knowing the realities of a family moving, etc., over the next 18 years. It is our understanding they wanted to be truthful in what they felt they could accomplish. Through our two adoptions, it is our experience, that as adoptive parents we are responsible for completing these reports, and the placement agency (not the homestudy agency) responsible for sending them to the country.

We chose to work with CAS because we wanted to work with an agency whose mission was to care for the orphan and minister to the young women who found themselves in need of hope for their child's future. Having worked with them before, and having countless recommendations of families we have "met" personally and via adoption forums, we can say that CAS met our criteria. Unfortunately the other agencies we were told partner with AGCI are not agencies which parallel our Christian priorities for adoption or principles of life. (ie help same sex couples to adopt, not family friendly) We were perplexed by AGCI's choice of adoption partners but not shocked. Unfortunately we have seen too often how those who would call themselves Christians increasingly embrace what the world sees as normal.

In a lengthy conversation I had with an intake counselor a couple of months ago I expressed my concerns about at least one the agencies AGCI was using (now we have concerns about more...) and mentioned our desire to remain with CAS, explaining to her about the agency. She seemed interested but first and foremost concerned that AGCI's requirements had to be met. Unfortunately we have been in contact with at least 2 NC Christian families who are complaining about the hs agency they say they are "stuck" with because of working with AGCI. We were hoping our case would open the door for them to work with CAS as well. Also, in the interim, we have "heard" a few things about the agency we are not comfortable with, at least without lengthy investigation. We are saddened because of AGCI's lack of discernment with this but feel it has all worked out for the best for us.

We also feel that though the placement agency is the agency who will place your child, it is the hs agency who you become intimately involved with, even after your child is home, through the postplacement process. Bringing someone into your home to meet with your family is a very personal issue and one we do not take lightly. We want to feel at ease and trust the individual we work with and feel they are available to offer assistance if we need it. This we have found working with CAS. All that to say, we will stick with CAS!

"Webinar"

Amazing how technology has changed the way we get information. For those who don't know what a 'webinar' is let me explain. It is, in a nutshell, a seminar via the web.
Today we participated in one about Ethiopian adoption sponsored by Children's Home Society and Family Services (henceforth known as CHSFS). The woman who hosted it, Nora, was very informative and amiable (thank you Jane Austen, LOL!). After it was over we contacted her directly about our case and it's special issues. She said she'd get back to us as soon as she was able to speak with other staff. Unlike other agencies she did not immediately say all would be fine or ask for our $ first before checking. This has gotten CHSFS some major brownie points with us!

Children's Home Society and Family Services

Samuel spoke to an Ethiopian couple CAS referred us to. They have just recently completed an Ethiopian adoption through Children's Home Society and Family Services. We sent for an information packet from them and will participate in a webinar they are having on Thursday.

Only a few weeks ago...

It was only a few weeks ago we were so set on adopting from Viet Nam and now we are BEYOND excited at the thought of adopting from Ethiopia.

We are amazed at the difference a few weeks has made. Where we had not even thought of Ethiopia then, now the thought brings tears to my eyes, and the photos of African babies a smile to my face. It is truly amazing how prayer and a whisper from the heart of God changes your life.

Psalm 68: 31 Princes shall come out of Egypt; Ethiopia shall soon stretch out her hands unto God....

Agency?

Right now the “biggie” in our adoption journey is what agency we will adopt through. Though we cannot use the agency we used for Amelia’s placement (they do not do adoptions in Ethiopia) we can use the homestudy agency we used and LOVE. YAY!!! It is so important to us that the agency that comes into our home be like minded in the mission to care for the orphan and widow. It has to be a ministry, first and foremost.

The other priority, which has to do with the placement agency, has to do with the facility in country which cares for the children. Since the Ethiopian government does not charge a fee we want to make sure the agency uses the fees they charge to care for the orphans in country. Not only those who will be adopted but those orphans who will remain behind. Also humanitarian aid to the country is also very important to us.

I have to say, once again, that this is the part I really do not like. Having worked with a few agencies that were not the best, to be nice about it, we really are a bit gun shy. Well maybe just me

We're on our way...

Samuel contacted All God's Children for Ethiopia adoption information and I requested packets from SEVERAL other agencies. I also signed up for several Ethiopia adoption yahoo groups!

Who will it be???

We have asked our homestudy agency, Christian Adoption Services here in NC, to contact All God's Children to be added as one of their partnering agencies. Without this we will not be able to use AGCI.

I am assured that God knows where our baby will be and will lead us to the agency that will help us bring him home!

Double vision?...

Samuel spoke to the director of our home study agency yesterday and apparently they were talking multiples, LOL! Well when I last added up Samuel's income we barely had enough to adopt one, but with renewed vision, and unbeknownst to us, Samuel called the last company that had not sent him his 1099. You should have seen him when he came down this morning with calculator in hand. He asked me to look up the USCIS chart and how much we would need to adopt 2, and then with a BIG smile turned the calculator to reveal the amount. Adding in his reimbursement income the amount surpassed what we needed. Now we're not saying we are adopting two, though we are ready for a Courage and Triumph, (we have God's Grace, Joy, Blessing and Mercy... so far...) but it is amazing to think that with all that happened last year that that much money came in. We are blessed and in awe of God's faithfulness!

Incredible, Awesome, Exciting, Wonderful, Amazing... God is good... ALL THE TIME!!!

Today has been incredible, awesome, exciting, wonderful, amazing... Why? Because God is good... ALL THE TIME!!!

Today started like any other Monday. Family discipleship, breakfast, school ...but shortly after we had started Language Arts Samuel came running down from his office and said, " So what do we need to do to move forward?" "Where did that come from?", I asked. My heart was racing as I waited for his response. He told me that he had been praying about what the Lord wanted for us to do. He had wondered why Ethiopia had been on his heart and if that had been his own idea or the Lord's. He shared that along with his thoughts were struggles. He had never thought of adopting from Africa and was wondering if this was too far of a stretch, too different of a culture? Could he relate to the culture? Could he relate to this child as his own? Of course the Lord knew what his struggle was and as he prayed this morning God spoke to his heart..."You do not need to be afraid". With that my husband immediately knew God's direction and that HIS grace would be sufficient for the marvelous journey He was taking us on. He also said God had used the adoption program we had watched the night before to speak to his heart. These are the parts of the adoption show that really touched Cliff's heart, and mine:

  • Multicultural approach to raising our children; multicultural approach to life
  • Raising children African style, the older take care of the younger
  • Look at the gifts we wrap, look how beautiful the colors are all together. Wouldn’t it be boring if they were all the same color? That is what God has done in our family, He has wrapped us all up in different skins and it is a beautiful picture from the heavens. (that is our family too, God’s Tapestry of Love, a family photo in shades of brown!)
  • What truly makes up a family, traditions, values, our faith. What color are those? What color is integrity and commitment and when you need a hug does it feel any differently from brown arms than white arms?

I have to add that hearing my sweet husband I wanted to laugh. I had gone through the same feelings ,when for our first adoption ,we began to consider adopting from Asia. I knew I could raise a Latin child, to help them know, love, and embrace who they were and even deal with the prejudices of being Latino in our country; but an Asian child? Could I be what they needed as a parent? My answer came at a skating rink as the Asian adopted daughter of a friend fell and began to cry. Without thought, I ran out on the rink, picked her up and held her close, and as I did so the Lord whispered to my heart, "You do have the arms to hold this child, and the heart to love this child". As I wiped a tear from her face, with my heart full of love for our unknown child, I thought, "I can be your mother, I can wipe your tears, and I can love you!"

Now it was my husband's turn to hear the voice of God and as he did for me to be amazed at how God had answered my prayer.

Let me say that Samuel did not hear God's voice with reluctance. Far from it. His response was filled with exuberance, excitement, joy and a deep sense of humility and gratefulness that God has chosen him for this journey. As we sat and looked at some of the agency literature and DVD's about Ethiopia it was so precious to hear him saying, "Did you see that little boy, he's so cute", "I want that one and that one, soooo precious.", "Look, what a cutie!". It was like a child being let loose at a candy store.

So what else happened today? Well when God gets hold of my honey's heart he is 100% excited, green light, GOOOOOOOO... so his excitement turned to action and he was on the phone calling our HS agency director for counsel, gathering information from placement agencies and getting referral contacts. Oh and he was even looking at flights to Ethiopia (he is tooooo cute!). The flights go from US (DC) to Rome (refuel) to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It was fun to tell my sister and SIL we were adopting from Ethiopia by saying that since we really wanted to go to Italy on a honeymoon trip we had decided to adopt from Ethiopia!

A time to pray...

It's time for bed, but I cannot sleep, not just yet. I know something is happening, something in my heart, something in my life. It's time to pray...

"Father if this is YOU, if these desires have been placed in my heart by YOU, Lord move on my husband's heart. I have not truly shared my heart with Cliff because I have felt led to wait for YOU to move on HIS heart. I once again ask that if this desire is of You that YOU would confirm it through my husband and for him to eagerly lead us to where YOU call."

As we were watching the Hallmark Channel series "Adoption" tonight I wanted to scream out to my honey, "Cliff look at this family, how precious. What if our family "looked" like that? What if the vision of our family as God's tapestry of love and Avonlea's photograph in shades of brown came true..." But I was silent.

My honey and I have always been so close, best friends. He is my mentor, the one I look to for guidance, encouragement and support. We have always been able to talk about anything and everything so my heart is about to burst with what I am feeling. Hard as it is I know God wants to use my silence to show HIMSELF mighty on our next child's behalf.

Ok, I have butterflies in my stomach, I am excited to watch what God does...

Adoption Story on Hallmark Channel Online...

As I was watching an episode of Adoption Stories on Hallmark Channel Samuel joined in. There was one particular section that blessed our hearts so much. Though I had seen it before I did not remember what it was about. All I can say is that I think we were supposed to see this tonight...

I can't get it out of my mind...

I feel like when we were supposedly adopting from Taiwan last time yet I was drawn to looking online at Viet Nam adoptions. I keep looking at Ethiopia blogs, You Tube videos, adoption agency information on the sneak, LOL!

I have not shared much of this with the family but I know Avonlea is ready, willing, and excited to move on to Ethiopia. It is the fulfillment of the vision the Lord gave her several years ago before Annelise' adoption. While looking at a family photo, which then only included Samuel , myself, Avonlea and Olivia, she "saw"several other children in the photo. She was struck by the beauty of the "new" family portrait, and its varying shades of brown which represented the different ethnic groups of our children.

A great visit and more praying...

Today was our last post-adoption visit for Amelia. We had a very nice visit with our social worker and were excited to show her around the house. Though she had been to our home on a couple of other occasions it was nice for her to finally see several rooms decorated! Of course she ooohed and aaahed as we told her all Amelia's cute antics. She truly is a WONDERFUL baby, full of personality and lots of spunk. Every time I look at her I can't but be amazed at how much I love her. To think of my life without hers is, well impossible.

Today's visit was also supposed to be combined with an update for our next adoption in Viet Nam. Before proceeding there were papers that needed to be completed that my honey just could not get around to...just yet. Since he knew I no longer had time to complete all the paperwork on my own he had graciously volunteered to help BUT had just not been able to get it started. Hmmm....

After mentioning my need for help again, I had to be quiet. I knew I needed to pray more. Pray that he hear the Lord, that he know His purposes for our family, that He rejoice in God's goodness, that he know God's peace...AND that he come to me when it was time to move forward with whatever the Lord had for our family.
